And some make the day sunny, no matter the weather. Exhibit a: the a4 cabriolet. Audi already had a great thing in its 2002 redesigned a4. The subtle lines, the flowing interior, the fun stuff under the hood. They didn't need to go topless to make it great. That they did might just raise the bar on a car that was already a car driver top 10. The beauty of the 2003 a4 cabriolet is not that it can have its top dropped, but that it doesn't have to in order to be great. Convertibles are strange animals. They're loved on days when it's 70 degrees and sunny. They are loathed on days that are anything but 70 and sunny. Too cold in the winter, too unstable when it's windy and too susceptible to the elements, convertibles suffer when the conditions aren't just right. I drove the a4 for 400 miles during a very top-up february week of pure midwest winter. In the age of multi-use crossover vehicles, this is the crossover i can live with - a car for all seasons. Top up or down, the a4 blends the best of both worlds. Maybe the a4 was destined for good things from the start. It begins by sharing its platform with the larger audi a6 and volkswagen passat - both good folks to follow. It builds from there.

This years radio incorporates an in-dash cd changer, and a homelink universal garage door opener is optional. A blue fabric top can be installed on 2002 roadsters that are painted certain colors. Audis optional navigation system has been upgraded to provide nationwide coverage. Although the tt coupe and roadster ride a shortened version of the chassis used on the audi a4 sedan and volkswagens golf, jetta and new beetle, their suspension tuning is different. The tt comes with either front-wheel drive or permanently engaged all-wheel drive in the quattro version. The tt quattro coupe comes with either the 180-hp engine or a high-performance, 225-hp offshoot of that engine, which teams with a six-speed-manual transmission. The tt quattro roadster is equipped with only the 225-hp engine. An automatic transmission is not yet available. Demand was intense initially but has eased. Audi recalled the tt in late 1999 after complaints in germany about high-speed instability. Dealers then installed stabilizer bars and a rear spoiler on previously sold models. According to automotive news , audi sold 12,523 tt coupes and roadsters during 2001, which represents a modest increase over sales in 2000.

Introduced in the spring of 1999 as a 2000 model, the tt front-drive 2+2 coupe was joined one year later by a two-passenger convertible roadster. A lateral-skid control system called the electronic stability program (esp) also has been added for 2001. Still, a8 has given up some of its previously exclusive features to the competition. All-wheel drive can now be found on the mercedes. And a8's signature feature, a lightweight all-aluminum space-frame structure, has been adopted by the latest jaguar xj8. And the big audi now has something similar to the bmw's most controversial feature, the i-drive system that allows the driver to control myriad functions through something akin to a computer mouse. Bmw insists that it's the best way to make adjustments and receive information with the least amount of distraction to the driver. The a8 system is called audi multi media interface, also designed to give the driver one-handed control of the audio system, communications, gps navigation and suspension dynamics. Although it's less complex and more intuitive than the bmw's, mmi still seems like much ado for such simple tasks as changing the radio station. The more things change, the more i wish they'd stay the same. What it is a high-end, high-priced luxury machine that packs many modern performance features along with traditional luxury appointments. The back seat is huge, the l (as in long) version of a8 being the only model coming to the united states: europeans can choose a 5-inch shorter version.
